A first shift in Sunshine Islands Bus Simulator is a scheduled bus duty, not a free roam. Pick a two-digit route, start the bus, stop at every stand the duty lists, and let passengers board and alight. Experience and Sunshards pay out only if you do not skip a scheduled stop.
Play it from the official Roblox page: Sunshine Islands Bus Simulator. PC, mobile and console all run the same duties. Keyboard steps below are the PC shortcuts. Phones and controllers use on-screen or gamepad buttons for the same jobs.
Keys that matter on the first run
| Job | Key | What it actually does |
|---|---|---|
| Start, then accelerate | W | Press once to start. After that, W is the accelerator. In Pro Mode that one-press start does not behave the same way unless the server is lagging and you hit W immediately after spawning. |
| Brake | S | Service brake. A long press can select reverse when the bus is stopped. |
| Steer | A / D | Small inputs. Fast steering at speed makes passengers complain. |
| Parking brake | P, or Shift in mouse driving | Set it at the stand. Holding it while the bus is still rolling counts as harsh braking. |
| Mouse driving | R | Left click accelerates, right click brakes, mouse steers. With manual acceleration, the top of the screen accelerates and the bottom brakes. |
| Indicators | Q left, E right | They cancel after you turn the wheel far enough and centre it again. |
| Front door | K | Opens both leaves, even if a bus has a single-leaf mode. Passengers board only here. |
| Rear door | L | Alighting door when the bus has one. The Enviro200 and other single-door buses have no rear door. |
| Wheelchair ramp | J | High-floor coaches have no ramp. Kneeling has no shortcut. |
| Lights | N, then N again | First press is low beam, second is high beam. B toggles the cabin lights. |
| Hazards, wipers, horn | X, Z, hold H | Use hazards if you stop away from a stand. Not every vehicle has wipers yet. |
| Gears, when fitted | 1 and 2 | Manual transmission only. |
| Cameras | F1 to F4 | First person, passenger view, third person, watch camera. |
Version 2 also added manual steering, manual throttle and mobile tilt steering. The developer's May 2024 controls video walks through those options. A February 2026 driving video for this same place recommends lowering steering speed in the control settings if passengers complain about turns.
Run the shift in order
- Choose a two-digit route from the menu. Locked routes cannot be driven as a normal shift. A Daily Challenge can still assign one after level 10.
- Start the bus and release the parking brake. From the May 2026 client fix (V3853), the game also clears the parking brake for you on startup. Do not hold P while you roll away.
- Pull up within about 7 metres of the stand. The game then asks for the parking brake and the front door. Two depot stands are tighter: the CSB Depot rooftop and the Forever Transit depot only prompt at about 3 to 4 metres. If you roll past the stand, the prompt never fires.
- Open the front door with K and wait until boarding finishes. Passengers tap a reader or pay into the farebox, then sit, or stand in the aisle or upstairs if the seats are full. The rear door does not speed boarding. AI passengers board only through the front.
- Listen for the bell. The passenger walks in a straight line to the exit. Open the rear door with L if the bus has one, wait until they are off, close up, and go. On a single-door bus, nobody boards until alighting has finished.
- Repeat for every scheduled stand. Finish the duty. The payout is experience and Sunshards, and it depends on not skipping a stand.
What makes passengers complain
AI passengers have been in the game since version 1.4.5. Version 2 made them taller and added wheelchair users.
- Harsh braking, a long burst of acceleration or braking, and speeding all draw complaints. Holding the parking brake while moving is read as a harsh stop.
- Opening the door and driving off startles people near the front door.
- A wheelchair user needs both door leaves open, the ramp out (J), and the bus kneeled. There is no kneel shortcut. They will not move to the door until the bus has stopped and the parking brake is on.
- The CSB Scania K360IB and the Forever Transit MAN RR8 cannot carry wheelchair passengers. They have no lift and no wheelchair space. Those passengers are skipped and they complain.
- On the Dennis Trident and the REBC MAN Lion's City the ramp is at the rear door, but wheelchair passengers still enter at the front.
- If the aisle is blocked, the next passenger waits with a hand on the reader.
Some duties never board anyone. Private hires, sponsored Daily Challenge routes, university route U47 and staff shuttles are free services, so the boarding step is skipped.
A June 2024 pro-mode video also turns the air conditioning on before moving, because passengers can complain when it is left off. That tip is for pro mode. It is separate from the everyday braking and speeding complaints.
Shift or Free Drive
| Scheduled shift | Free Drive | |
|---|---|---|
| Route | Fixed stands and a duty | Anywhere you drive |
| Time and weather | Set by the route | You can change them |
| Pay | Experience, Sunshards, route progress | None |
| Vehicles | The fleet you can already drive | Anything, plus three exclusives: the Pirate Ship, the Honda Civic Type R and the Family Bicycle |
| Use it for | Levels and unlocking routes | Learning the map, photos, group runs |
Free Drive exclusives cannot be used on a paying shift.
Mistakes that wipe the first hour
- Leaving the parking brake on while rolling.
- Stopping too far from the stand, so the 7 metre prompt never appears.
- Closing K before the boarding animation finishes.
- Skipping a stand to catch the clock. That removes the reward instead of saving the duty.
- Starting on a three-digit inter-zone route. The strategic roads are posted at 70 km/h or more, the stands are far apart, and one miss is expensive.
- Opening L to hurry boarding. It does not work.
Level 10 is the first real gate. It opens Daily Challenges, the large servers and rare-appearance buses. Until then, short inner-zone duties finish more often, and finishes are the progression. The practice order is on the starter route board. Controls for special letters are in how to read a route number.
